Lionel Messi has cast doubt on his participation in the 2026 World Cup, despite scoring twice in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela in the penultimate round of the South American qualifiers.
Although Argentina has already secured qualification, the 38-year-old captain remained cautious about featuring in what would be his sixth World Cup, citing recent injury setbacks and missed matches with MLS side Inter Miami.
“In the past, I said it was unlikely I’d play in a World Cup at 39. It’s nine months away, which is close — but at the same time, it’s a long way off,” Messi told reporters at the Monumental Stadium following Thursday night’s match.
“I love this, I love playing, and I never want it to end — but the moment is coming. I’m aware of that. It will happen when it has to happen,” Messi admitted, acknowledging the approaching end of his illustrious career.
Following the match, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed that Messi would be rested and would not travel with the team for their final World Cup qualifier against Ecuador in Guayaquil on Tuesday.
Asked about his fitness, Messi responded: “When I feel good, I enjoy myself. But if I’m not feeling well, I really struggle — I’d rather not be playing. So, we’ll see.”
